COURSE OVERVIEW

Our Graduate Entry Medicine programme is unique in Wales and one of just a handful of similar programmes of medical study in the UK open to graduates of any discipline from the UK, EU and overseas.

This accelerated, four-year medical degree follows an innovative, integrated spiral curriculum designed to reflect the way in which clinicians approach patients and how patients present to doctors.

You will study the basic biomedical sciences in the context of clinical medicine, public health, pathology, therapeutics, ethics, and psycho-social issues in patient management.

Together with a strong focus on clinical and communication skills, you will develop the academic, practical, and personal qualities to practise medicine competently and with confidence.

Our entry interview process is structured to take account of these qualities needed as a doctor, as set out in ‘Good Medical Practice’, and the capacity to meet the outcomes of ‘Outcomes for Graduates’. In summary:

GCSE Grade Requirements

All school leavers who have studied in the UK must have Biology (or Human Biology), Chemistry, English Language, and Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics or Statistics) at GCSE level, at grades 777666 (AAABBB for GSCEs taken before 2015) or above, in any order. The Science Double Award may substitute all sciences at GCSE.

GCSE grades are not required for applicants who are applying with a degree.

2. UCAT

UCAT – third decile or above

All candidates for medicine must undertake the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). Your overall UCAT score will be used in our selection for interview in conjunction with your academic performance to date. To register, and for further information please see: www.ucat.ac.uk

For school-leavers/gap-year students and graduates, applicants will be ranked according to a 50:50 weighting applied to the UCAT score and academic ability as measured by UCAS tariff or academic ability for graduates based on a weighting of degree classification or postgraduate degrees compared to other applicants who apply in that same year

Graduates who apply for the five-year programmes and four-year GEP programme who meet the minimum academic criteria will be ranked against the other graduate applicants applying in that year according to 50:50 weighting applied to the UCAT score and academic ability as measured using a points weighting of degree classification or postgraduate degrees

You will not be offered an interview if you obtained a total UCAT score below the third decile. Please note there is no guarantee that you will be offered an interview if you score above the third decile.

For your application to be considered, the following entry requirements should be met:

1. Academic qualifications

A Levels

A levels at A*AA, achieved in one sitting over a study period of no longer than two years. A-levels must include:

First A Level – Chemistry or Biology
Second A Level – Another Science (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Maths)
Third A Level – Any A level except Critical Thinking or General Studies, or Further Maths if Maths is taken too. Please note, the third subject you choose does not impact your application and is free choice.

The A* can be in any of the three subjects and doesn’t need to be in one of the required sciences
If A level Maths and Further Maths are offered in the same sitting, Further Maths will not be counted towards the minimum A*AA requirement.
General studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted subjects.
For candidates offering four A levels, two science and two non-science subjects, our normal offer is A*AAC (A grades required in two science subjects, one of which must be Biology or Chemistry)
Barts and The London does not consider any applications from students who are re-sitting their final school years thereby taking 3 years to achieve the required grades unless protected under the Equality and Diversity Act 2010. Applicants citing this provision must follow our extenuating circumstances procedure.

Age

All students for the A100/A200 programmes must be 18 years old or over by the end of course enrolment, which is the end of the first week of enrolment (usually mid-September). Applicants who will be under the age of 18 by the end of course enrolment can apply for deferred entry so that they will meet the minimum age requirement by the start of the course.

Applications are encouraged from mature students. There is no upper age limit, provided academic entry requirements are satisfied.

4. English Language Requirements

GCSE English Language grade 6

An IELTS score of 7.0 overall with 6.5 in writing and 5.5 in the other components. This must be taken within two years of starting the course.

Alternative routes into Medicine

There are also alternative routes into medicine including: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)/Oral Medicine; and, Oxford and Cambridge (Oxbridge) and St Andrews applicants – please see further information below.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) / Oral Medicine – 3 Years

Entry on to year 3 of the 5 year MBBS programme is designed specifically for qualified dentists who are fully registered with the General Dental Council and members of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) or the British Society for Oral Medicine (BSOM). There are 10 available places each year and is only open to UK/EU applicants. Applicants must have the MFDS, at least 12 months experience of clinical pathway and clear career aims. In addition it is desirable to have some publication history or research experience.

Applicants applying for this course are not required to take the UCAT.

Applications should be made directly to Barts and The London from October each year with an application deadline in December.

Students looking to join the St Andrews and Barts route should apply to St Andrews, directly. Following the 3 years at St Andrews students who are selected from this route join the Year 3 of the Barts course for a further 3 clinical years. FAQ ON QUEEN MARY MEDICINE ENTRY

Can I re-sit the entire AS/A Level year?

The School of Medicine and Dentistry does not consider re-sit applicants who achieve the required grades over the normal two year period unless they fall within our extenuating circumstances policy.

If I do not meet the minimum academic entry requirements but offer or exceed the correct tariff points, can I apply?

No, we expect applicants to be predicted/achieved at least AAAb (pre-2017 results) or A*AA (2017 results) in the correct subjects, therefore you cannot offer tariff points that add up to AAAb or A*AA (year dependent). We will only consider the grades AAAb or A*AA (year dependent), or higher.

What is the deadline for application through UCAS?

The deadline for medicine and dentistry is the 15th October.
